And then, when we’ve scarcely absorbed this seemingly Machiavellian counsel, he reveals that he has always believed he’ll die there, and has been voicing this death wish all along without any of the other characters recognizing it for what it is

I love that so much. Poor Henry. That whole scene just absolutely tears me up -- particularly the ESC version with Michael Cronin and Michael Pennington, which never ever fails to reduce me to a puddle of tears on the floor.

Also, Falstaff/Doll is one of my favorite ships in the histories. I always sort of want to write about them, but I don't know what.

Also also, Act II has that great moment where Lady Percy tears her father-in-law a new one. I adore that. I played Lady P for an audio production once and doing that was this really heady mix of energizing and totally draining.

I honestly think that 2H4 is quite possibly Shakespeare's most underrated play -- it is absolutely beautiful, but it is absolutely caught up in the knowledge of what's come before and what's about to happen. Which also makes it my favorite play to teach, though maybe I am weird. ;)
