On the note of fanfic, I've had the same guy email me three times asking why there are fewer fanfics at VTM now. Are your students anything like this?

Well, if the assignment says "Write a 2 to 3-page essay about [topic]. Your essay should do X, Y, and Z ..." there is invariably one student who asks, "So, do you want this to be in the form of an essay?" I guess that's a yes.

It's my standard intro-to-writing-in-the-sciences assignment sequence, which requires students to pick a claim from a list of topics that range from the relatively uncontroversial ("Exposure to secondhand smoke causes significant health risks") to the borderline batty ("The full moon influences human behavior"). Needless to say, he chose the latter.

For the next paper, they have to design a controlled experiment to test the claim's validity. I'm waiting with bated breath to see what this guy comes up with.

Though occasionally something like this wouldn't be completely out of place on one of my lesson plans... perhaps come the end of term when things are /really/ starting to pile up.
