In response to the question, Do you think Lysistrata and The Trojan Women have the same message about war? If yes, how would you sum up that message? If not, where do you see differences?

"Really that question is not appliciple. Our society today is so much different than their society then and the ideas of war I don't think are interchangeable. War today is extremely economic and heavily relies on technology. The reasons for war do not have much resemblance to the reasons then and really I don't know what I am saying I mean seriously what type of name is Lysistrata. I can hardly even say it let alone if I met her at a bar ... how would I ever enter that in my cellphone?"

I'm loving these in-class writings. Comedy gold.

Good things to consider when naming your offspring. "If a guy tried to pick her up in a bar, could he put the name into his cell phone??"

Is the right answer supposed to be "Yes" or "No"?

If I'm her father, no.

If I'm her mother, "Why would you go out with a boy who can't figure out how to enter your name in his cell phone? Honey, please find someone a little brighter than that!"

If it wasn't you, I wouldn't believe it. Dear God.

I have a friend, however, who didn't apply to Aberystwyth University because he was troubled by the fact that, if he ever to be asked which Uni he was at, while at a party and very very drunk, he wouldn't be able to answer.

Oh, I believe it. I am surpassingly unsurprised. I think he was probably trying to figure out if I actually read the in-class writings; now he knows.

Don't worry about it. You'll never get to first base with her, anyway.

... Not until you singlehandedly end the war, anyway. I was tempted to ask him "Do you really want her number?" but I'm not sure I want to know the answer.

A MARY SUE name! Lysistrata Serenity Dumbledore-Riddle!

"Appliciple?" WTF? Don't tell me you've never heard of spellcheck, or a dictionary. "Appliciple?"

You need to collect these and write a book or something. Really. These are not only hilarious, they make me feel better about the papers I write.

Well, to be fair, this is unedited in-class writing, done on the fly without access to a spell-checker or dictionary -- but I do wonder if some of these students were ever taught to sound words out :)

Well, it would certainly have kept the kids who did a presentation on Tuesday from pronouncing the word "Athenians" "Ay-thians." I mean, how do you lose an entire syllable?

Hilarity.

I'm all of a sudden tempted to name my hypothetical daughter Lysistrata, if only to keep her away from that particular end of the gene pool...

In all, though, that's hilarious.

LOL! Granted, his essay is less grammatical than most FAP posts, but does he get points for honesty?

Oh, that's so mean... and true! ;) (Well, for a lot of the part).

He gets half-credit for being present and writing something, yes. The purpose of starting classes with in-class writing is to 1) demonstrate that you were in class so I don't have to take attendance; 2) demonstrate that you've read the text; 3) boost participation by making sure even the shy kids have something to talk about, and he's at least done the first :)

Hm. I can't imagine what would have happened if I had ever written something like that and handed it in to one of my teachers... but it certainly wouldn't have been nice, that's why I never dared. Though I did once write something R-rated for Literature class and handed it in =D.
